Monument Au Fantome by Jean Dubuffet

The large free-form red-white-blue sculpture on Avenida de las Americas is the park’s most well-known artwork and one of Houston’s great treasures. Its title means “Monument to the Phantom” or imaginary city in French.

There are seven individual forms that represent different features of this city, including a church, hedge, chimney, dog, phantom, tree and mast.

It is by Jean Dubuffet, an internationally-known 20th century French sculptor who passed away in 1985 (two years after the sculpture was completed). He liked to communicate fresh ideas without reference to “cultural clichés.” Dubuffet was inspired by the art of outsiders, which he called “L’Art Brut”. It is painted fiberglass over steel frames, and the tallest piece is 33 feet. The sculpture is part of his Hourloupe series, which has companion sculptures in New York, Chicago and Europe. For more than two decades, Jean Dubuffet’s sculpture, Monument au Fantôme, has sat among Houston’s downtown skyscrapers at 1100 Louisiana. In 2008 it was relocated to 1500 McKinney (Avenue de las Americas) in Discovery Green Park on the eastern edge of downtown. The tallest part of the fiberglass over steel frame stands 33 feet tall. Seven individual forms—chimney, church, dog, hedge, mast, phantom, and tree—included in the sculpture represent features of Houston.

John Milkovisch, a retired upholsterer for the Southern Pacific Railroad, started his project now known as the Beer Can House in 1968.

The Beer Can House is a folk art house in Rice Military, Houston, Texas, covered with beer cans, bottles, and other beer paraphernalia. Houstonian John Milkovisch worked through the late 1960s to transform his Houston home at 222 Malone Street into the Beer Can House. The Beer Can House is now one of Houston’s most recognizable folk art icons. It is covered with flattened beer cans, bottle caps, bottles, and other beer ephemera. The house is estimated to include over 50,000 beer cans. Milkovisch started his project in 1968 laying thousands of marbles, rocks, brass figures and metal pieces in concrete blocks and redwood, all of which were used to make patios, fences, flower boxes, and an array of other items. The result was a yard with no grass, as the entire front and back yards were covered with cement. When asked why he did it, John simply answered, “I got sick of mowing the grass.”Today, the Beer Can House is owned and operated by The Orange Show Center for Visionary Art, a non-profit organization founded in 1980 to preserve and present works of extraordinary imagination and provide people the opportunity to express personal artistic vision. In March 2004, John Milkovisch was named Man of the Week on Spike TV. In 2010 comedy news site Cracked.com said, “if there’s ever a vote on who the awesomest guy ever was, John Milkovisch ought to at least be on the ballot.”

Synchronicity of Color, or the “art boxes,” are iconic art pieces at Discovery Green®.

They were commissioned by Discovery Green and implemented by the Houston Arts Alliance and the City, which owns the largest two of the four-piece ensemble because they clad the city’s two underground garage stair structures.

Margo Sawyer, a professor of art at the University of Texas at Austin, conceived and fabricated the metal boxes while she was participating in the master planning for the park. Their paint is used on drilling platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. The major pieces are “blue” and “red.” Sawyer created two “echoes” that are part of the ensemble – the orange-themed boxes at The Grove and a mix of colors at HPL Express. She believed the park would benefit from color, and she delivered many times over.

Sawyer’s work offers some of the most popular photo spots in the park.
