    The History of FPC

In 2019, First Presbyterian Church of Houston celebrated its 180th anniversary. In the many years leading up to this milestone and the time since, FPC has been a community committed to following Jesus’ example of open-handed service.

We firmly believe that God placed First Presbyterian Church here—in this growing and changing neighborhood, in the heart of this city of opportunity and innovation, to have a profound impact for the sake of the gospel. And being Here to Serve remains at the heart of our vision for the future.

    Plan Your Visit

Hello! We’re glad you’re here and want to invite you to join us in worship this Sunday, either online or in person, as well as share our current discipleship offering as you explore our church community.

FPC Houston is a gospel-centered, mission-focused, intergenerational church whose mission is to carry the gospel across Houston and around the world.

We accomplish this as we GATHER together for worship and prayer, GROW together in Sunday School classes, small groups, and other discipleship offerings, and GO in service both individually and collectively, through organized mission activities, innovative ministry initiatives like Project Flourish, and the investment in new faith communities through our church planting program.

We aspire to be a cathedral for Houston that embodies its diversity, inspires faith, and leads change for the common good of all peoples and communities. In order to do this, we center ourselves around vibrant worship that moves us to Christian faith formation, mission, and hospitality for all peoples and communities.

    VIBRANT WORSHIP

Each Sunday, we worship together at 8:30 and 11 am, in person and online. All worship services are in a traditional worship style with a sermon based on our scripture readings, congregational hymns, music sung by our choirs, and music played by our organists before and after. We follow the liturgical calendar of the church year with seasons of Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Holy Week, Easter and Pentecost, and celebrate Holy Communion during our services on the first Sunday of every month.

Usually once a month, on Sunday afternoons or evenings, we gather for services of Evensong that feature music sung by our choirs. Whether online or in person, we will always be happy for you to join us.

    FAITH FORMATION

Growing together in community is core value at St. Paul’s, and we have opportunities to connect with each other and God for all ages and life stages. For adults we have Sunday school classes at 9:45 am. For children, we have weekly Sunday School lessons and children’s choirs. For youth, we have Sunday School, Sunday Evening activities, and other weekly gatherings.

    MISSION AND HOSPITALITY

Love can be shown in a multitude of ways. Whether you have a heart for those experiencing homelessness, becoming a better steward of the Earth’s resources, or assisting in ongoing disaster recovery efforts, we would love to connect with you about our mission opportunities.

    Joel Osteen

Raised in Houston, Texas, with a loving family of seven and world-renowned parents in full-time ministry, Joel Osteen never imagined that he would follow so closely in his father’s footsteps. As a young man, his training and interests were behind the scenes in television production, though he was close to his father in ministry.

“There’s no greater feeling than being able to help people rise higher and overcome something and feel better about themselves. I think that we’re all made to help others, to lift people UP.”

    – JOEL OSTEEN

His father always encouraged him to preach, but Joel would politely decline time and time again until one day in October 1999 when his father was admitted to the hospital with kidney complications. Joel finally agreed to preach the next Sunday, and his father passed the following week. Joel’s first sermon was the last his father ever heard. Joel and his wife, Victoria, were suddenly thrust into full-time leadership of Lakewood Church.

    Real Life. Real People.

Welcome to Houston’s First! We are a thriving and diverse community of real people experiencing real life together. Sundays are a time where we gather together to grow and give of what we have, but our lives consist of much more than attending church on Sunday. We want to be the church every day of the week.

    Gather. Grow. Give.

A church our size has a lot to offer. In fact, there’s so much going on, we realize it can be difficult finding the right place for you or your family. That’s why we’ve based our ministry around a three-part strategy: Gather. Grow. Give.

Just take one step and see what God can do.

    Our Story

In June of 1996, Alan and Joy Clayton came to Conroe with two couples to start The Ark Church, whose mandate was to build a church to save households. Today The Ark Church continues that purpose, with an emphasis on kids, youth, groups, care and outreaches. Whether you are a household of one or 100, this is a place for you and your family to live with God, grow stronger, and make a difference in the world.
